It became standard in my area in 1973. Before that people would buy alcohol and pour it in their tanks in the winter to avoid gas line freeze. I have had boats since 1972 and never had a problem with the ethanol.

I get a little better mileage in my Jeep. My co-op has a million home with electric meters. The readers ran straight straight gas for 6 months and ethanol for 6 months. Ethanol did about 2% better on the mileage. That's close enough to go either way.
