"Twenty million vacant homes" is a bogus number. It comes from the HVS and includes all kinds of things like mobile homes used as hunting spots in the summer. ROFLOL. census.gov A much better number is based on the excess vacant rental and owner units. And there are still quite a few - that is why the recovery in RI will be sluggish in 2011.
