Sam, from the UTEK 3rd Q report...

The third quarter was marked by several achievements, including the shipment of our first Model 1800 for magneto-resistive (MR) and giant magneto-resistive (GMR) rowbar-level pole trimming,''stated Arthur W. Zafiropoulo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

It sounds like UTEK is ready for GMR. I also think GMR is the
natural evolution of MR. The options for further increasing
areal data density are limited. Data detection methods have
already been pushed close to the limit (PRML). What's left?
Flying closer and shorter magnetic transitions. GMR can do
the latter. Flying heights are already getting close to
1 microinch, so contact recording (being worked on) is next.
Jim Porter of DiskTrend expects HD capacity to go for 2 cents
per MB by 2000. To do that, manufacturers cannot ADD components.
They must increase data density.

FWIW, I've been out of the DD industry over 3 years and
have no useful industry contacts.
