US accuses China of illegal wind power aid

The US has accused China of unfairly subsidising its domestic wind industry, calling for talks with Beijing that could lead to a case at the World Trade Organisation.

This comes at a time when China’s policies to promote domestic innovation in sectors like technology and clean energy are coming under increasing global scrutiny.

The United States Trade Representative says a programme known as the Special Fund for Wind Power Manufacturing was providing hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to Chinese wind equipment makers, and excluding foreign-made components in contravention of WTO commitments. This fund provides grants of $6.7m to $22.5m and excludes foreign-made components, acting as an effective import substitution subsidy, the trade body said in a statement .
