Scientific-Atlanta Scraps MCNS Modem Plans

Scientific-Atlanta has dropped plans to introduce an open-systems Multimedia Cable Network System (MCNS) cable modem, avoiding what the company believes will be ruthless competition from giant consumer electronic firms.

SA is a major set top box and infrastructure supplier to the cable industry and earlier had announced plans to make an MCNS-compatible modem. However, 17 large electronic firms have told the Cable Laboratories center in Louisville, Colo. that they plan to build the open systems cable modems once a final standard is approved. Cable Labs is an industry-sponsored center charged with developing standards and qualifying equipment for cable TV operators.

SA officials said the company may decide to enter the MCNS market later, depending on how it develops. They expected the decision to sit out the first wave of MCNS modems to have no effect on the company's mainstream business of set-tops and cable front-end and transmission equipment
