Looking for assistance: Gateway Desktop PC Audio Problem

Good Morning Board,
I have a puzzler for the smart cookies on this board.

My desktop PC (Gateway, new in 2009) audio is not working properly. Note that I can hear without difficulty when using earphones plugged into earphone jack on the front. Recently I've lost audio when using the external speakers which are plugged into the analog speaker jack on the rear of the PC as they've been for the past two years. I've tested with a different set of speakers with similar negative result. So I can only hear audio through the earphones.

Other notes: I'm getting power to the speakers as I can hear them come on and see a light come on when powered up. My speaker sub-woofer also contains a radio tuner, and when I push the button to get radio I can hear the radio no problem. So I only lose the audio when trying to play audio from the PC itself. I've tested different programs (itunes, WMP,the cd drive itself and internet audio/video) all with negative results.

I've gone through the multitude of settings for the audio program manager and cannot seem to find any issues. So, where do I go from here? I've troubleshooted about as much as I can and figure the next stop is the repair shop but am hoping there could be a simpler explanation before taking that painful step.

Thankful in advance for any assistance.

regards,
mariner
