Russ -- If I had time, I would reply to these items one by one -- for now forgive my brief response simply to the first one -- labor shortages in Shanghai. For the past five years this has been a growing issue. It is a matter of POLICY to try to reduce reliance on migrant workers, and it is of course economics pure and simple as well. The opportunities in places like Chongching (population 30 million) are growing and making it more attractive to stay home rather than drift into other cities or one industry towns and live in dorms. But so what? This is progress -- much better than an economy built mainly on the backs of migrants. And this is only news if you were not aware of this trend several years ago -- a trend that was adopted as policy at all levels of government.

I do not doubt that China is going through changes -- and I do not doubt that I am not aware of many things. But I am aware that this reorientation is more than simply the wheels coming off the bus -- which is what you seem to be implying, as I read it.
