>You have to be religious ...?<
Is this a question? Greg used the same technique, pasting a question mark on the end of a declarative sentence. Then he hounded his mark saying "I asked a question".
For me to properly recognize the question, the structure needs to be that of a question. Otherwise I get the feeling that it is a rhetorical device, a goad, one that somehow strives to cheapen the proper answer:
No. I place value on human life, and yet I am plainly irreligious. From this fact, the necessity of religion cannot be maintained.
"If either of us was a woman our answer would count for more."
This argument scores immediate sympathy points, implying that by action of reason, the answers at which we mere males arrive are not valid. I do not need to be a woman to hear and appreciate stories of young women whose horizons have been suddenly collapsed by an unwanted pregnancy.
As for your "gosh" sentence, you are implying that I am more than likely to be morally monstrous. Is this your desired effect? If so, (loud raspberry). |
