if TheCow's suggestion doesn't lead directly to success, I'd try increasing your virtual memory (i.e. at least double whatever it currently is). I've personally run into problems from not having adequate virtual memory both on my old XP system and on a friend's XP system.

If you go to START/HELP
search for Virtual Memory and all should become clear.
