The not-quite-question:

"Seriously, my wife is "into" spiritualism and shamanism and signs from eagles and various animals. Indeed, it was she who informed me that someone I knew had a deep cancer--and it was so. So I don't scoff at things that are unknown. It is an awesome and mysterious world." Message 27019621

>So your wife talks to dead people and they told her that there was someone who had cancer in your family?<

I disagree with you entirely. It is a question. You may not like it's tone, but that does not make it any less a question.

Declarative question
Definition:
A yes-no question that has the form of a declarative sentence but is spoken with rising intonation at the end.

Declarative sentences are commonly used in informal speech to express surprise or ask for verification. The most likely response to a declarative question is agreement or confirmation.
•"A declarative question has the form of a statement:
You're leaving?
but has the intonation of a question when spoken and is marked by a question mark in writing.

As I noted the rising intonation at the end is lost in print but it is there none the less.
Do you not find it strange that an avowed militant atheist would be receiving supernatural information about the health of acquaintances and then cites THAT as the reason he does not scoff at the supernatural? I was actually shocked to hear that Solon had his Tarot cards read and reported the results to this thread. I was likewise shocked to hear that his wife "informed" him about someones cancer and he would cite that as his reason to believe in whatever form of divination was used to obtain that information. Thanks for the advise but I will deal with Solon on the level ground of HIS choosing.
