I recently had a discussion with a few (middle class) French young people on holiday. We talked about many things but the conversation eventually centered on gun ownership. Being from the US, I tried to explain the Second Amendment when they specifically asked about it. However, they did not seem to listen to the explanation, or were polite in their disagreement of its validity.
My conclusion from the discussion: The French have a completely different cultural approach to self defense. In France self defense is something that the police do, and individuals (based on this very limited sample) let them do it and have no need to assist, interfere, or insist on better results from police/government.
They thought people could not be trusted to have guns for self defense or to defend their liberty (against government foreign or domestic, for example.)
Muslims do not have the same cultural approach.
The world is not a safe place, and security is elusive.
At the risk of sounding critical of this aspect of the French culture, sheep get eaten by wolves.
