"Steps" was not an ideal choice of words on my part. If I use "boundaries", will that help? The legislation in place requires patient and family consent. That is strong protection against the right to die being expanded into an obligation. To me, that part of it goes away.

Perhaps the disconnect is that you see the limited policy being described as an inhumanity. I do not. With the protections in place (no reasonable hope for a cure, patient's consent and desire) I see it as eminently humane.

I would see nonconsent euthanasia as inhumane. For me, that is a hard boundary that makes it easy for me to see where the slippery slope begins.

As regards my being prejudiced the other way - yes, I imagine so. But I still strive to examine topics that provoke uneasiness/distaste in me with some perspective. There is always room to change my mind (although changing my mind on the verity of scripture is something I estimate as "vanishingly unlikely"), and I like to learn things.

About the provenance of the principles in the DoI, I have recently participated in a lengthy, fascinating and fruitful discussion on the "Actual Left v. Right Discussion" thread in Politics/Government. That was a recent learning experience - what the doctrine of "natural law" is. I won't synopsize here...

cheers js
