Does being an animist necessitate being a theist? (Do you need to believe in God if you believe in spirit?)

No it does not.

Do you not find it strange that an NON avowed NON militant NON theist who makes fun of people for believing in supernatural miracles would be receiving supernatural information about the health of acquaintances and then cites THAT as the reason he does not scoff at the supernatural?
