USB is a plug-n-play bus designed to simplify the connection of a wide range of peripherals to the PC and to eliminate the "cable jungle" in back of the computer. my PC has two parallel cables, four serial cables, a video cable, mouse, keyboard, ethernet, SCSI, and audio out. all of those except for the ethernet could be consolidated into one USB daisy-chain. USB will make PC's a lot more consumer-friendly and allow on-the-fly connections to new devices like video cameras, digital cameras, and even home electronics.
I'll bet that Intel's participation in this Alcatel demo is to highlight Intel's USB technology and that Intel contributed nothing on the ADSL side.
