The chink in the military to me was the advent of so many contractors in Iraq.. That is a Roman situation.. I got the impression that Niall thought we would be moving beyond sticks and stones warfare.. so spending could reasonably drop on conventional and tactical... The contractor(mercenary) route is problematic though..

Interesting thought on Chinese nationalism.. and Chinese focus on keeping the folks happy (kinda un Maoist :O)

I still think China leadership fears it folks... US leadership does not.. so will see if the 'right thing' gets done eventually in US.. as he expects.. We need to be cheering for it .. we are too close for comfort..

If the Limbaughs of the world get in .. then we get a nice Malthusian solution.. but the 'public good' guys don't have it right yet either ..

Meanwhile I continue to make plans for Nigel

BTW Niall was not flattering wrt US leadership on any count :O)
