My 2 cents . . . I'd object in the case in which it is a buyout. For other circumstances -- like this -- perhaps we should arrive at some limit for stocks that appreciate hard in the first week for folks who enter after 12/31. Say 50%? Maybe some simple formula that ties in allocation?

As has been said many times, it's marathon, not a sprint. I can't think of any instance where a portfolio that included a late pick that had already charged out of the gate resulted in a contest win.

In fact, I am not sure that the leader in the first week has ever won. Maybe once?
