Stewart: ‘Obama is not the comeback kid; he’s Luke Skywalker’

Returning from a two-week vacation Monday, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart reviewed the Democrats legislative accomplishments in the lame duck session and came to the conclusion that the force was with President Barack Obama.
As the year ended, many credited Stewart with bringing focus to the 9/11 first responders health care bill. But the Comedy Central host spent no time patting his own back Monday.
Instead, he noted that Democrats had come through in the lame duck session in a way they had failed to do for most of the 111th Congress.
Along with passing the 9/11 first responders bill, Democrats managed to extend unemployment benefits, repeal "don't ask, don't tell," overhaul food safety laws, and ratify the START nuclear weapons treaty with Russia.
"Holy crap ball, Democrats!" Stewart exclaimed. "You need to lose midterm elections more often! It suits you. If only you'd completely lose the Senate we'd completely solve our immigrations problems."
Stewart observed that the media have tried to give President Bill Clinton's old nickname, the "comeback kid," to Obama.
"Obama is not the comeback kid," he declared. "He's Luke Skywalker."
By winning the presidential election, "he defied outrageous odds to become The New Hope," Stewart said, referring to the first Star Wars movie.
"Meanwhile, the Republic-an Empire grows stronger," he continued, with a nod to The Empire Strikes Back.
Sarah Palin can even see Tatooine from her house, he joked.
Return of the Jedi completed the trilogy, where Republicans (portrayed by Jabba the Hut) threatened to filibuster all legislation unless the Bush-era tax cuts were extended.
"Against all odds, the Democrats managed to defeat a well-armed and well-oiled machine," the Comedy Central host added.
Stewart's analogy ended with triumphant Ewoks dancing on the planet Endor to celebrate the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell."
