The turtles have been around for millions of years and as a species have survived previous field reversals. This suggests that they have a collateral means of finding their migratory way. While the field has been strong and stable, that collateral faculty hasn't exerted selective pressure. My prediction is that turtles will be hard-hit but won't be driven to extinction solely by the loss of the field. With people fishing with such enthusiasm and technique, I see the real danger to turtles as closer to the surface.

...I wonder what the field strength is doing. I read somewhere that it has decreased by 20% over the last century. I also wonder if, when the dipole component passes null, the quadrupolar component, although weak, will sustain a scrap of magnetosphere.
