I wonder what the author means by "quite a long time". Perhaps it confirms Tillerson's perspective of it being dominant into the second half of this century.

One the subject of batteries, Nigel Calder's treatise on Electrical and Mechanical Boat Essential Systems delves into the real world of batteries and how they work and need to be maintained. It is an excellent source for the sailboat owner to begin the journey of learning the art of power management in a constrained environment.

My boat contains a set of six 6-volt Gel cells, wired up in series of three banks of 12 volts each for a total of 540 ampere hour capacity. The regulator is backed by a diesel powered generator (alternator), a wind powered generator, and a bank of solar panels. There is a separate 12 volt starter battery and a Link monitor and a Heart 1000 three phase charger/inverter completing the system and challenging my brain to understand the workings of all of the above. Its a lot to sort out as time goes by. The storage of energy and consumption of power is a constant challenge for the typical sailboat driver.

The day that diesel is no longer available. It will revert back into a pure sailboat with a useless core engine. I prefer sailing without engine power but sometimes the energy assist is nice. Like entering or exiting ports.

The one question I have regarding electrical powered vehicles concerns warmth in winter in cold environments. How much energy can be diverted to environment warming for the passengers ? Especially vis a vis the load on the engine.
