The thing I was thinking of is what I've heard about how banks train people to spot counterfeit money. Instead of studying counterfeit money, they send them to where the real thing is printed, and have them study the real thing and become expertly familiar with it. Then, when any variation of a phony bill comes along, they can much more easily identify it.
