What they don't really need, and may never need, is a high speed (in the water) armored vehicle that can cross 50 kilometers of open water to assault a defended beach. There has been no need for that since 1950.

DOD needed 60 years to figure out that amphibious assaults have gone the way of the bow and arrow.
Make that reason # 9,234,765,349 why we don't need DOD.

This sudden revelation does create a huge problem for the USMC. They are now an armed service desperately searching everywhere for a mission.
