The Collins' piece was an instant of an argument that was in favor of controlling automatic weapons but permitting them for hunting purposes. I see nothing wrong with that distinction, though working out the details of legislation would be the point. I thought the Brady bill did just that but I gather it has either expired or would not have addressed this situation.

There was nothing unusual or sinister about Loughner's gun - it was a garden-variety autopistol of a kind favored by police and security personnel. I would raise an eyebrow at the argument that such a gun is too [adjective] for ordinary gun owners.

My reading is that the gun he had was capable of 30 or 31 shot repeating action and he had a chamber, ready to reload, with another such. I don't see that as an "ordinary" gun and would assume such would be prohibited under the legislation Collins discusses and I now see Lautenberg will sponsor in the Senate. Most likely McCarthy will do so in the House.
