I thought the current mission of the USMC was to go in as a self-contained unit with broad capabilities.

That is true up to about 15 miles from shore.
Beyond that they need heavy support.

I'm speaking of major engagements here, not LRRP or recon-in-force patrols.
The Marine Divisions are light enough to insert fast and
heavy enough to win battles quickly and decisively with naval gunfire in support, and establish secure beachheads for a larger and heavier invasion force.
They are self-contained for that purpose.

With the exception of our last Airborne Infantry Division (The 82nd) Army divisions are much heavier and are designed to conquer and occupy countries.

A small example of capabilities is Khe Sanh. The Marines inserted there fought bravely day and night. But most of the heavy combat and logistical support was provided by the Army and USAF. Most notably the Army 1st Cavalry Division and USAF Wings already in I Corps.

The Marines were ordered to hold Khe Sanh by Army General Westmoreland. The Marine Commander, General Walt, was quite adament in opposing the idea. He did not see it as appropriate for the Corps.
