I had a good friend and fellow tournament chessplayer slip into psychosis as I watched. I tried to help him stay with reality, but my efforts convinced him that I was part of the massive "conspiracy", and he turned me off and treated me like all the other people around him. Eventually all of his friends, including me, contacted his parents, who had him committed.

We'd be playing chess while idly watching TV when a commercial came on and he'd say, "Did you hear that?" during a commercial or even a program. After carefully probing, it became clear that he thought the TV commercials and programs were addressing HIM individually, providing him with instructions and guidance. I became the "enemy" before I ever really learned what Tim was supposed to do.

When I think of my friend Tim, and see all the violent Republican and Tea Party messages, it's easy to see how a misguided nut with what's known as "ideas of reference" could take them literally.
