The defense budget needs very serious paring. There is absolutely no doubt about that.

Nation building in Afghanistan is a joke. But it is the conflict Obama supported during his campaign. It is a cheap war for the Taliban's Saudi paymasters, but an incredibly expensive and fruitless one for us.

I was always concerned that toppling Saddam would remove one of Iran's implacable enemies from the scene. This concern is now real. When we leave, the Shiites are sure to take over. Their connection to Iran will be the sole legacy of the Iraqi war.

I was in favor of Iraq but in retrospect I was wrong, though I did have the concern set forth above.
