If you want to read back in the thread you will find some lengthy discussions of what people think government should do and how to pay for it. It varies widely depending on one's particular philosophy.

The main objection most of us have to the current line from the right is that they will claim to spend less but just go on with bloated deficits bu skewing tax cuts to their base, plus the corporate welfare subsidies and all the rest.

There is no coherent plan on the table from them for effective fiscal discipline. It's just a slogan. That's why spending ran amok under Bush-Cheney. Just new noses in the trough, that's all.

But at the same time, anyone who wants big cuts has to specify just what, and how they will maintain essential government services that exist now. I've never seen anyone stumble over that hurdle.
