Depends on how widely you paint the "liberal/conservative" brush.

If conservative is defined by the present stances of more prominent far right folk now such as Palin, Limbaugh, and Beck, then you are correct. But if conservative includes Nixon's former speech writer, Bill Safire; David Brooks; Ross Douthat; then they've consistently included that voice.

Krugman is hardly the "voice" of the NYTimes and certainly has nothing to do with deciding who writes for them--whether as journalist or columnist. Howell Raines, then the managing editor of the Times, picked him. And my guess is the Times has not regretted it for a moment. Just as their pick of Safire, which I thought, at the time, was a huge mistake, turned out to be what superb newspapers do.
