I share many of his concerns, and do believe we're at a tipping point economically, but I'm not as pessimistic as the author at this stage.

Economic growth and spending reductions could change these trends quite a bit. I do agree with the author our outdated base infrustructure overseas should end. Europe should take care of Europe and our bases should be closed, same with Japan. They cost a fortune to maintain and operate. South Korea is a different story, they need our support until the nut-case in NK is overturned. We can project the rest through the Navy and Air Force rapid deployment capability.

If we moved back spending levels, cut taxes, opened up our coastline to oil exploration and partially privatized social security, the generational problems would be manageable. Yes, there doesn't seem to be political will today, but in a couple of years that may change.

Fortunately, the information economy is being led by America and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Internet led corporations may prevent a severe economic decline until we muster the political will to address real change.
