The "course that got us into the mess we are in" clearly started at two different points in time --
1) FDR's New Deal, which included SS and unemployment compensation, and far worse,
2) LBJ's Medicare and Medicaid, which have in the course of 45 or so years essentially bankrupted the country.

Let me give you a little secret, as a class, most actors are pretty stupid. There are exceptions but they are the great ones......usually the ones they call the actor's actor. Reagan was neither great nor an actor's actor. Instead, he was the first GW Bush....put up by your GOP cronies. He looked good and people liked him....while he continued to look good and keep people like you happy, the real assholes....Cheney like people........ran the gov't.
