The poll found that 77 percent of Americans favor spending cuts, 9 percent favor tax increases, and 9 percent prefer a mixture of spending cuts and tax increases. Popular programs for cutting included Social Security for the wealthy (supported by 63 percent), local probjects (58 percent), reducing farm subsidies (55 percent), and reducing defense spending (52 percent). .
