Okay, what are the big MSFT innovations?

Gates was good at using other people's technology to further his own interests. And often, he used borderline techniques to get them.

If you look at MSFT's OWN ideas, they were crap for the most part. I refer you to the excellent book, "Writing Solid Code" -- which explains some of the huge technical blunders MSFT survived.

Even today, after gutting the old Borland software development team, they are unable to build an IDE that is as good as the original Delphi 1.0 IDE -- now nearly 15 years old. OMG. Look at SQL Server. The most popular SQL database on the market and you cannot even import a simple CSV file to it without writing code (there is the bulk import, but it is highly restrictive for large databases). I just find no evidence of innovation coming from MSFT.

When MSFT had a total of 15 employees I purchased a Z80 FORTRAN compiler from MSFT. It was so damned buggy you couldn't use it. I talked to them about it, their response was "We know about those bugs but really don't have any plan to fix them".

I believe that was the last time I actually talked to MSFT support. The point is they have been successful because of a smart contract negotiated by Gates. Not because of any innovation, whatsoever.

I wouldn't say Gates is an idiot, but as a technical person, I've been consistently unimpressed.
