Well, we certainly have another huge difference of opinion. I know kids can survive a great deal, but why put them through it needlessly? My kids are my buddies. One does not hit or betray their buddies.

First of all, the author was exaggerating. Did you not get that? Secondly, our kids are doing crap in school....things have got to change if we are remain competitve.

A key point of hers.........when a kid, something new tends to be very frustrating to them esp. when its not a game. It only becomes fun when the task is mastered. And with kids....who have little discipline and education......it requires their parents to impose that discipline.

Both of my kids tell me every day how appreciative they are that I was always so gentle with them. And they still phone me several times a week and did all through college. Most kids do not.

Wonderful. However, your kids are not typical. Most kids don't want to learn.

They tell me most of their friends have terrible relationships with their parents and once again how grateful they are I was their dad.

Who cares? That tells me nothing. I am not saying put unreasonable demands on kids.....only reasonable ones.

And I would remind you, as mentioned, Japanese students have the highest suicide rate in the world. So don't give me the spare the rod, spoil the child bullshit.

Japan has a higher rate of suicide in general than the US. Suicide is perceived differently.

And you are wrong about childrens egos! They are fragile. As an example virtually everyone walks around with an inferiority complex for no good reason.

I have never met a kid who doesn't like discipline and reasonable demands placed on them. Not one.

I think my kids achieved their full potential and they were raised as gently as any kid on earth.

No one was talking about beating them.
