Exactly correct.

The candidate that wins is the one that attracts the most independent voters. Obama won because he convinced a majority of independents to vote for him.

In 2010, in addition to Delaware, the GOP also ran a weak candidate in Nevada and allowed Harry Reid to return to the Senate when he should have easily been defeated in 2010.

The key is to run strong candidates that can win general elections. That is how majorities are created.
