You forget that millions were taken out of the work force and defense created a demand for even more labor. Pearl Harbor was the end of the great depression. Hirohito approved the attack. When the Americans didn't surrender he realized their mistake but by then it was too late. The "I will not send your sons abroad" was no longer a relevant campaign promise. Things were rationed so even though people like my dad were working double shifts there weren't many things you could buy with those funds. I remember a Christmas where all my gifts were made of wood or card board. All the metals were being used for the war effort. Every body bought "War Bonds". My dad would go to work before I got up for breakfast and wouldn't come home until after I was in bed. Then when he worked for the department of defense he was station in Newfoundland, Belgium and finally Guam. After the war every veteran was able to go to school under the GI bill. The young man next store went to school for television repair. My mom bought her first washing machine and we replaced our ice box with a refrigerator.
Cars that were put in storage for the duration of the war all needed new tires and rubber parts replaced. The great depression was finally over. The house my folks bought for $2500 was now worth $10,000. They quadrupled their investment in a very short time. Not only did they quadruple their investment but the house was free and clear as they paid off their mortgage ahead of time. It was a different time and a different era. As a child I used to go house to house and collect scrap metal and paper. My Mom saved run off grease from cooking and we sold it back to the grocer who sold it to a dealer. Most every window flew a banner which told the neighborhood how many in that household were in the service. The color of the star told of the condition of their service man.
Believe me Hirohito ended the Great Depression in America. I know because I was there and not only saw it but lived it for myself.
