Robert: 2 examples:

1) Assume 10,000 cash in your account.

You can purchase up to 20,000 on stock. You could buy and sell this same $ size position all day.

2) Assume 10,000 in fully paid for securities in your account which are 50% marginable. Available margin $5,000. You could buy or sell 10,000 worth of stock all day.

Notes:

Margin available is calculated on fluctuating value of securities.

No interest charged if all positions are flattened by day's end.

Consider putting cash in treasury bills to earn interest while trading against margin of treasury billls during the day. You earn interest on your money will you trade it!
