Wage increases in the manufacturing sectors of China averaged close to 9% last year, I read. China basically has a market economy. Factory owners there have to compete for workers just like here. Some Chinese factory owners have expanded their facilities into Vietnam in the search for lowest wage employees.

China is a hybrid, not an old-style communist structure. It's unique in the world right now. It combines a market economy with a single-party political system. Even the political system is a hybrid. Democratic style elections go on at the municipal level.
