I'll bet a lot of that cost is how much you (and your insurance company) had to pay for people who come to the hospital without insurance.

I'm sure there's some cost in there for lawsuits against the hospital because people died there that shouldn't have....i.e. getting a Strep and a Staph infection both at the same time....or getting a blood clot that no one bothered to check, and the person dies of it after an operation, because they were sent home too early.

I'm sure there are a LOT of ETC's built into each and every bill.
