There are some tanglible benefits to share that no one on this thread has yet articulated (developer reach, accessory support, etc). IPhone won't be as appealing to the high end market if it ceases to be the first one getting 3rd party support. On a related note, there are also benefits to scale from a component sourcing standpoint.

The thing is Syl is talking about iPhone (a unit) share vs. Android (a platform) share... so the discussion gets screwed up. A 15% smartphone unit share would put Apple near the top against all of smartphone models.

Honestly, when the market is mature, I expect Apple to have around a 20% share, which is pretty good for a company that has so many irons in the fire. Either that or they are going to have to come out with multiple model with different features.
