You're suggesting that 10's of millions "need" to buy a gun on the spot and would be inconvenienced or placed in danger if they can't?
No I'm suggesting tens of millions of people might potentially buy guns. They would be inconvienenced if they had to wait, whether or not they "needed a gun on the spot". I didn't say they would all be placed in danger. Well to an extent any of them who didn't already have a gun, and who where at all competent in using guns, would be placed in some degree of extra danger, the danger of potentially needing a gun and not having one. But most of those people won't actually be attacked during the waiting period.
And you argument that restrictions have resulted in people being undefended is laughable
It might make you laugh, but its true.
"but the amendment does give people the right to keep and bear arms."
If you are member of a militia..
No, it says "the right of the people", not "the right of the militia". The milita could/would be formed by people bringing their own guns, but the right itself is not the right of the milita. Its explicitly a personal right in the constitution, and Heller backs that up.
Also even if it was a right only of milita members, many millions of people in the US legally are members of the milita, often without even knowing it.
311. Militia: composition and classes How Current is This? (a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

Why are you all so frightened of everything?
I'm not very frightened. I don't even own a gun. OTOH I have nothing against the idea, not even for myself, I may buy one in the future.
I'm OTOH concerned about expansion of federal government control, esp. in ways that violate the constitution.
"but would you impose a waiting period on someone who wanted to make a political statement?"
Many cities and municipalities if not all have restrictions on demonstrations and parades and rallies.......ie get a permit.
Which would be the equivalent of requiring a permit for a gun show, gun shop, or shooting range, not owning and carrying a gun.
A better equivalent for owning and carrying a gun, would be waiting periods to speak, or make a political speech, or perhaps "harsh political speech". |
