In the first place, the true number of uninsureds who cannot afford their own insurance is in the range of 10 million. So why would we buy insurance for 30 million (actually, 32 million)?

More importantly, however, the reform bill was sold to Americans on the basis that it was a cost cutting measure, NOT merely to insure more people. Remember? Our current health care system is "unsustainable", so we're going to control costs? A Big Lie.

Even a NYT survey at the time clearly showed Americans were unwilling to pay more taxes to provide free insurance for people who didn't have it.

This entire legislation was built on ONE BIG LIE, from the ground up. Not like the claimed "Bush" WMD lie you've been so critical of (where it was actually a good-faith mistake). No. This is a contrived, deceptive, intentional LIE to sell a piece of crap to Americans when they knew damned well they didn't want it.
