'Completely Inadequate' Robert Costa The Corner Wed Jan 26, 2011 09:27 On curtailing federal spending, Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell says that President Obama's State of the Union message was "completely inadequate." In an interview with MSNBC's Daily Rundown this morning, McConnell criticized the president for not outlining specific budget cuts. "To freeze spending, at this astronomically-high level that we've achieved over the last two years, is totally inadequate. I think we are bound for some disagreements on the issue of reducing our annual debt," McConnell said. "We need to get back to the 2008 levels. That's a significant whack out of our annual discretionary spending. That's what we are going to try to achieve." When pressed to opine on the Tea Party response delivered by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R., Minn.), McConnell threw a little cold water on its significance. "There are 535 members of Congress who respond to the State of the Union," he said. "She probably got a little more coverage than most members of Congress, but everybody was responding to it, and we encourage everybody to respond to it." .
