That it is a GOP accomplishment has nothing to do with it. What matters is that it was designed so as to give patients skin in game AND to allow competition to work to bring prices down, and it worked just as GWB said it would. The Democrats didn't want to do it that way. And in fact, they have destroyed the program's fiscal integrity with Obamacare.
I opposed Part D at the time, warmed to it, then saw it destroyed by the Dems and so I now recognize that ANY such program is a disaster because Democrat tinkering will destroy it even if it starts out working well.
It is characteristic of these big government entitlements that they grow without bound and cannot be fixed once they break. Today, the country is on the brink of bankruptcy because of Medicare and SS, yet, when anyone (like Ryan) tries to be honest about it, the Left demagogues the issue incessantly.
This is the reason that thoughtful people oppose this kind of big government policy. Government, quite simply, has a very bad track record on these programs.
At this point, with the Obama deficit hitting 1.5 Trillion this year as a direct result of HIS mismanagement (you can no longer falsely accuse Bush), I would hope some people will start to come around, but I see no real evidence the facts will become clear to people. |
