ElM, it was in the late 1960s that I first learned about inflation and "fighting inflation" after a couple of decades of learning to save money and earn interest. By the end of the 1970s, my cynicism was complete about the depredations of governments by the sleight of hand of inflation. <
Alexandre Tombini, Brazil’s new central bank governor, has sought to establish his credentials as an inflation fighter with the release of a tougher-than-expected statement from the central bank.

The way they "fight inflation" is the same way an alcoholic fights alcohol. The problem isn't some giant goblin which comes lurching out of the economic jungle to attack innocent passersby and governments. The problem is in the minds of those who claim to be "fighting inflation".

I have no trouble "fighting alcohol". It just sits there in the shop or in a few bottles in a cupboard, ignored week in, week out. I would have similar problems "fighting inflation". Instead of spending my days manning the pecuniary pixelation process, working hard, tying up bundles of new bank notes and issuing new loans of freshly minuted money to banking buddies. I'd simply fool around on the golf course, tidy the shed, or rant to you. People would have to make do with the money already in existence.

Tombini made a "statement"! What a joke. I bet "Inflation" got a big fright when it heard his statement, tucked its spikey tail between its legs and ran back into the economic jungle to hide from him, leaving the happy citizens to conduct their financial affairs without worrying that "Inflation" was hiding under the bed or about to pounce out on them as they walked around the streets.
