For some reason, the Republican party, best I can tell, everywhere and anywhere in recent years, stakes out opposition to all new taxes. But, in the past of which I'm aware, they've always been opposed to raising income taxes. Property taxes were matters for local government and several things dictated that: huge healthcare cost increases; police unions who controlled the negotiation process (subject of another post sometime)--average police officer salary in my small borough is well over $100k without overtime; pension increases have, with one exception, been reasonable; school budget increases are reasonable though large because of healthcare costs; etc.

But because these votes are local votes, many of the boroughs/townships/municipalities are willing to bear the burden to get the services.

An interesting thought and just thought of it. There are two enclaves for just the very wealthy in nearby northern Bergen County. Neither is willing to pay for a public library.
