i see there's been a longish discussion on social security. FWIW, my own position is slightly different from those I've read, as some of you know.

I'm in favor, not surprisingly, of solving the SS funding crisis by taking the caps off payments. Whatever one earns, however, wealthy, gets hit with the same flat tax. It's my understanding that takes care of the funding problem.

Will it pass the congress? Of course not. Just one more illustration of the degree to which the wealthy rip the system and harm the country.

I'm not in favor of means testing. At any level. It's not a welfare program, nor should it be seen as such. Once means testing gets started, there will be increasing pressure to lower the level as a way to deal with crises. And the program will progressively look more and more like a welfare program. As it does it loses it's political clout.

As long as it's something "we all" pay into and receive from, it's not welfare and it's political clout remains powerful.

I also see the use of "ponzi scheme" labels as right wing political spin. It is true that it's something we all put money into and should expect to receive back from. Period. The "ponzi scheme" label is another way the right has to try to label it a welfare program.

One of the characteristics of the right, at least in recent years, has been disdain for arguments depending on notions of a "common good." Just one more illustration here.
