The momentum: The total momentum of any group of objects remains the same unless outside forces act on the objects (law of conservation of linear momentum)

Once the thing starts moving hitting it is something you should not even think about.

Why that? Well, we are all in the neighborhood, one wold not try to apply a counterforce to counteract that momentum for the obvious reasons.

Before, you had that small wooden boat propelled by hungry oarsmen. That was easy to steer as you wanted. Now you have the VLCC moving.
