I don't think we're quite ready to give up on the Postal Service. They are still delivering upwards of 177 billion pieces of mail annually, which works out to 584 million per day. ( Could a lot of that information be delivered electronically? Of course.

But FedEx isn't an acceptable replacement, unless you want to pay ten bucks every time you need to mail a contract or something like that.

I'm sure the time will come when we're all so wired up that the USPS will become unnecessary, but bear in mind that around 25% of the US population still has no internet access at all, and of those who do, a significant number are using dialup.
