diodes are semiconductor devices which allow current to flow in a single direction only and no current flow in the opposite direction (diode in the "old days" were also tubes - anyone remember tubes in radios/tvs - hehe) used in power supplies to rectify AC during the conversion process to DC other types of diodes are used to regulate voltages to predetermined levels (zener diodes) in rf tuning circuits (varactor) using the diode's capacitance characteristics in a reverse biased mode (no current flow) to vary the frequency at which the circuit tunes BTW anyone interested in MR heads might be interested in Plasma-Therm and recent sales of their equipment to Japanese MR head manufacturers biz.yahoo.com
