SEG's Medalist 8641 series, the drives which I believe are the most comparable to the MR Caviar drives, use similar density 2.1G platters.

Also recall that WDC stayed with TFI technology (and lower density platters) longer than their competitors for cost reasons -- a strategy that was VERY successful for them in F97. I don't think simple areal density is a good measure of cost. Comments?

Actually I havent yet discovered where all these MR platters are coming from -- KMAG, HMTT, and STMD have been primarily TFI producers have they not?
