There are people out there who would know the answer to this far better then I but I will throw out a couple ideas.
The cost per ounce for an open pit of 0.1 oz per ton is not just the mining cost. There is the transportation, milling, extraction etc. It might cost twice as much to mine but four times as much to mill-extract. Metallurgically you might be able to recover 90% of the 0.1 but only 75% of the 0.05 To come out with the same amount of gold per day you have to mine, transport and mill twice as much material and the cost of doing this could easily be far more then double.
Hopefully someone will jumb in here and do a better job of answering your question.
